International Career –
Profile –
Kevin Williams is a fighter who needs no introduction among BCKA ranks. With an international fighting career that spans over a decade, medals and trophies from world championships, national, international and local competitions, as a fighter Kevin is highly respected. After entering his first competition as a blue sash back in 1996 and taking second place there was no looking back for Kev. Although he favours the semi contact style of competition, Kevin is more than adequately skilled in light contact having picked up world championship honours in this discipline also. His combination of extraordinary hand speed with instinctive timing and great awareness makes Kevin an unstoppable force.
Training under BCKA Chief Instructor Alex Barrowman, Kevin is an example and role model to other students. He practises kung fu and achieved his black sash in 2001. Kevin is a valuable member of the BCKA England Squad as both a fighter and a coach. He regularly takes squad sessions, breaking down and demonstrating fighting techniques to his fellow team mates. Always available at competitions both national and international to coach and offer support to his team mates, Kevin is truly an asset to the BCKA.
One of the high points of Kevin’s fighting career has to be his win at the Irish Open in 2004. In one of the toughest categories fighting in some cases professional semi contact fighters and with all his team around the mat to support, Kevin put in an outstanding performance and proved himself to be the best of the best. 2011 saw Kevin take gold in the WKC World Championships, the only competition Kevin had left to win. Kevin's performance in this competition saw him awarded with BCKA's Performance of the Year after beating a Canadian fighter that had not been beaten in over 18 months in a thrilling final. Other high points have to be his double bronze medal wins in both 2010’s and 2009’s world championships, in particular in 2009 after a shoulder injury hampered his preparations for the tournament.
It takes a fighter with a great amount of talent to reach the level of fighting internationally and in world championships. To consistently perform at this level year after year, putting in the hard work and effort in training requires you to be an exceptionally dedicated individual and this Kevin certainly is. In spite of some pretty big injury setbacks over the years Kevin has always managed to come back better and stronger than ever, proving to himself and those around him that he has what it takes to be a force and be successful in this sport.
